Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — The APS superintendent has a new contract. Superintendent Gabriella Blakey had her contract renewed until June of 2030 following a unanimous vote by the APS School Board. Blakey has led the district since 2024. The renewal does not come with a raise though, she currently has a salary of $295,000 a year. Under her leadership the district has seen improvements in several areas including reading and math proficiency. Graduation rates are up also by almost one percentage point which is now close to 77-percent. It is still lower than the state rate. Speaking with the Albuquerque Journal, Blakey said she is committed to working with the Albuquerque Teachers Federation to find solutions to their workplace concerns, including long hours, administrative issues and poor student behavior as part of a recent survey earlier this year. APS has about 63,700 students at more than 140 schools and employs over 11,000 staff members. One issue facing the district is lower student enrollment. The district has seen a massive drop in total enrollment, with about 27,000 fewer students this year compared to 2010. The district points to declining birth rates and more students leaving for charter and private schools, as some of the causes.
