CLOVIS, N.M. — A skunk in Clovis has tested positive for rabies, marking the first confirmed case within city limits in 2026 and the second reported in Curry County so far this year.
Clovis Animal Control officers responded May 1 to a report of a skunk exhibiting unusual behavior in the 2300 block of East 14th Street. The animal was safely captured and sent for testing. The New Mexico Department of Health later confirmed the skunk was infected with rabies.
Health officials say rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system and is typically found in wildlife such as skunks, bats, and foxes, though any mammal can carry it. Infected animals may show signs like aggressive behavior, unusual tameness, or a lack of fear of humans.
Authorities say they are continuing to monitor the situation and are urging residents to report any wildlife acting abnormally to Animal Control.
