Albuquerque Fire Rescue and Solid Waste crews responded to a trash-load fire Thursday morning after a Solid Waste driver noticed smoke coming from the back of his compactor truck.
It happened on March 6, 2026, as the driver was running his regular route. When he saw smoke coming from the compactor body, he immediately dumped the load in an empty parking lot, keeping the fire from spreading to the truck itself.
AFR arrived and extinguished the flames, while Solid Waste crews used equipment to break apart the material, ensure there were no remaining hot spots, and clear the scene. The quick reaction saved the truck, which the city says costs about $550,000.
According to officials, fires inside trash loads are most commonly started by batteries or items that are still hot when thrown away.
City crews say the incident could have caused far greater damage without the driver’s fast response.
