Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –A man will spend three years behind bars after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. The case goes back to last year when thieves stole a trailer and an excavator from Miguel Varela. Days later, Varela’s brother contacted police saying they had identified the thief and that the two brothers were following the suspect in Albuquerque. When officers arrived they found one vehicle had been rammed and the suspect was dead. Varela said he pulled in front of the vehicle to stop it. He claimed he saw them reaching for something and started firing. The driver was killed and investigators said the driver had a gun in the vehicle but it was still in a holster and tucked in the seat. Judge Joseph Montano took Varela’s lack of criminal history into account when deciding on his sentence of three years behind bars.
