Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –A standing room only crowd filled council chambers in Santa Fe’s city hall last night where citizens gathered to give their input on the controversial Civil War Soldiers’ monument. The obelisk once stood on Santa Fe’s plaza and has been a topic of debate for five years after protesters tore down part of the monument in 2020. An architecture firm presented options the city could take including using the demolished pieces or using new materials to rebuild the monument. Costs could range from over $400,000 to $1 million. A measure will be introduced at tonight’s city council meeting to temporarily move what’s left of the monument to the NM History Museum. Mayor Michael Garcia said that would be an early step to start rebuilding the monument and that he’s committed to getting that done as quickly as possible.
