ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Daniel Bruce, the last remaining member of New Mexico United’s original roster, will take the field for the final time tonight as the team wraps up its regular season against Rhode Island FC.
Bruce announced his retirement earlier this week following a season-ending knee injury and surgery. Over seven seasons, he made a club-record 170 appearances, scoring 17 goals and becoming a fan favorite for his relentless energy and deep ties to the community.
United CEO Peter Trevisani reflected on Bruce’s impact, saying, “He turned out to be everything New Mexico United stands for. What he’s done on and off the field, the way he plays, that blue-collar mentality — he just absolutely clicked with our fans.”
Bruce’s teammates also praised his leadership and presence. “Having somebody there who isn’t necessarily a member of staff but is more a friend is a big thing for players,” Bruce said of his role during recovery. “I think it was a help for them but it was also great for me to stay involved.”
Bruce credits his father for instilling the grit that defined his playing style: “Every single game when you cross the line, the one thing you can guarantee is giving everything. I think part of that resonates with New Mexican people.”
Tonight’s match kicks off at 7 p.m. at Isotopes Park, where fans are expected to honor Bruce’s legacy. United will also recognize him before the game, and Bruce plans to support the team through its playoff run.
