ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Public Schools is teaming up with Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque to offer a summer program that combines literacy and meal support for children.
The “Story Time in the Park” program provides free lunches, reading sessions, books, and family resources at parks across the city.
Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while reading sessions take place Monday through Thursday.
This year, the program is introducing a new element — high school students serving as readers, sharing books with younger children and helping encourage a love of reading.
Educators say programs like this are especially important during summer break, when students can experience learning loss without regular reading. In New Mexico, where literacy rates remain a focus for educators, efforts like Story Time in the Park aim to keep young readers engaged while school is out.
Organizers say the program not only promotes literacy but also helps connect families to additional resources in their communities.
More information, including participating locations, is available through Albuquerque Public Schools.
