Farmington, NM — A suspected street race in Farmington ended in a violent crash and explosion, leaving one person injured and another facing charges.
Late Friday night, Farmington police attempted to stop two vehicles—a red Toyota Supra and a white sedan—seen racing at high speeds. As officers closed in, the white sedan swerved around another car, clipped it, and flipped into a barrel roll before exploding in the parking lot of a Smith’s grocery store.
Deputy Chief Kyle Dowdy described the crash as the worst he’s ever witnessed. Officers rushed to the scene and pulled a passenger from the burning vehicle. That person was on fire and was treated by emergency responders. The driver of the white sedan escaped the flames.
Police arrested 22-year-old Kalynn Kenworthy, the driver of the red Supra. Investigators say Kenworthy has a history of reckless driving and speeding. She now faces charges for racing on highways. Charges are also pending against the driver of the white sedan.
The investigation is ongoing.
