
Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –During the UNM Board of Regents meeting today, President Garnett Stokes announced her retirement from the position, effective July 2026. She became UNM’s 23rd president – and their first woman president – in March 2018. Since then, Stokes has led the university through COVID-19 and various situations, including shootings and protests on campus and turnover within Lobo athletics. UNM touted Stokes for improving student enrollment, along with expanding the university’s research and health care facilities.
