Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Findings from an investigation into a crash that left Bernalillo County Sergeant Michael Schlattman dead in February have been released. Miguel Orlando Perez was traveling at 64 mph in his semi-truck when he struck and killed Schlattman on westbound Interstate 40, near the Carnuel exit. Perez was in possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license at the time. However, investigators claim he didn’t brake before the collision and cited his “inattention” as a contributing factor in the crash.
The investigation concludes that there is probable cause to charge Perez with careless driving and “operation of vehicles on approach of moving authorized emergency vehicles” – both misdemeanor charges.
The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office will now decide if charges will be filed against Perez.
