WNMU APPROVES BENEFITS FOR DOMESTIC PARTNERS

SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents has voted unanimously to give benefits to its employees' domestic partners. The vote of approval during the regents' spring meeting Thursday followed similar votes by both the faculty and staff senates.

The university says it will recognize same-sex couples that meet its insurance carrier's standards, which are based on how long the couple has lived with each other and the financial dependency of the couple.

With the vote, professor and Faculty Senate President Dr. Emma Bailey say, the university will not only be treating its current workers more fairly, but that it will also be more attractive applicants.
