Mora, NM (KKOB)- New Mexico State Police have released new details about an officer-involved shooting in Mora County that prompted the local school district to cancel classes Monday. Investigators say officers were responding Sunday morning to reports of a man assaulting a woman inside a pickup truck along State Road 518. One caller reported the woman appeared to be trying to jump from the vehicle. When officers arrived, they found 34-year-old Amity Maes dead on the roadway. About an hour later, police say the driver, 24-year-old Alejandro Vigil, returned to the scene and led officers on a pursuit.
State Police say Vigil later got out of the truck, pointed a gun at himself, and then at officers, leading two officers to open fire. Vigil was wounded and remains hospitalized. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer.
