ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Investigators have determined that an explosion that damaged multiple apartments and injured two people in northeast Albuquerque was accidental, though the exact ignition source has not yet been identified.
According to Albuquerque Fire Rescue, crews responded around 1 p.m. Saturday to reports of an explosion at an apartment complex at 12899 Central Ave. NE in the Canyon Acres area.
When firefighters arrived, they found that several units had been impacted by the blast. Fire investigators later determined the explosion originated inside one apartment, causing significant damage to that unit and affecting at least one neighboring apartment.
Two people were injured in the incident. One person was transported to a hospital for treatment, while a second person was evaluated at the scene and released.
Investigators from Albuquerque Fire Rescue and the Albuquerque Police Department Bomb Squad examined the scene as part of a coordinated investigation.
Officials now say there is no indication the explosion was intentional. While investigators have classified the incident as accidental, they have not yet determined what ignited the blast.
The investigation remains ongoing.
