Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The weather may not indicate it but summer is essentially over for APS teachers, staff and students. Teachers are getting their classrooms ready this week with 6th and 9th grade students returning to school on Thursday and all other students begin on Friday. APS Superintendent Dr. Gabriella Duran Blakey addressed the media saying the focus this school year is giving students a sense of belonging. As for absenteeism at APS, Deputy Superintendent for Leadership and Learning, Randy Mahlerwein reiterated that students need that sense of belonging. Family and community involvement also are key and he stressed the strategic staffing models for middle schools and freshmen which incorporates team based educator models. APS will hold an Educator Summit tomorrow at the convention center where about 7,000 educators are expected to attend for professional development opportunities.
