ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico shoppers can save on back-to-school purchases this weekend as the state’s annual Gross Receipts Tax Holiday gets underway.
The tax-free holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, and continues through midnight on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026. During that time, qualifying items can be purchased without state gross receipts tax.
Eligible items include:
- Clothing and shoes priced under $100 per item
- Desktop, laptop, tablet, and notebook computers priced under $1,000
- Computer hardware and accessories priced under $500
- School supplies priced under $30 per item and intended for use in standard classrooms
The annual tax holiday is timed to coincide with back-to-school shopping and is expected to be one of the busiest retail weekends of the year across New Mexico.
State officials note that some items are excluded from the tax exemption under state law and remain taxable regardless of price. Retailers may also choose to offer additional discounts or promotions during the weekend.
