Santa Fe, NM (KKOB)- The Santa Fe City Council has approved a plan to close the Santa Fe Plaza to vehicle traffic during the summer, beginning in 2027.
Councilors voted 6-2 Wednesday to close the Plaza from Memorial Day through Día de los Muertos on Nov. 1. However, an amendment sponsored by Mayor Garcia, makes the closure a one-year pilot program, meaning the council will have to revisit the issue before extending it beyond the first year.
The proposal has generated months of debate among residents, business owners, and city leaders. Supporters say the seasonal closure will improve pedestrian safety, create more public space during the busy tourist season, and reduce the need for repeated street closures during major events such as Spanish Market and Hispanic Market. Opponents argue the plan limits vehicle access and could make the Plaza less accessible for some longtime residents and visitors.
