Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – In a report by our news partners, The Albuquerque Journal, federal court records indicate that money that was supposed to come to New Mexico from the U.S Department of Energy was cut because the state is considered a “Blue State” by the Trump administration.
The admission came in court filings as part of a lawsuit filed this month by University of California researchers demanding funding be restored in their state. The Albuquerque Journal reports that DOE attorneys admitted that the decisions made to accept or cut the money was based “solely on the political identity of the state.” Ten energy project grants for New Mexico were cut for a total of $135 million in federal funding. Meanwhile, 340 grants for states that voted for the president in 2024 were not cut. DOE has not responded to requests for comment.
A federal judge is expected to rule on the lawsuit by the end of the year. Attorneys for the California researches say the DOE made the admission instead of having to testify under oath by avoiding the discovery process.
