Las Cruces, NM (KKOB) – The former treasurer of the Republican Party of New Mexico will remain behind bars as she awaits trial in a deadly hit-and-run case in Doña Ana County.
An appeals court has denied Kimberly Skaggs’ request for release, upholding a district judge’s earlier decision to keep her in custody. Her attorneys argued that procedural errors were made during the detention hearing and maintained that Skaggs does not pose a threat to public safety. Skaggs is accused in a crash near Las Cruces that killed a bicyclist. Prosecutors allege she left the scene, later changed the vehicle’s license plate, and concealed the vehicle at another property in an effort to avoid detection. In addition to the criminal case, Skaggs is also facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the victim’s family. A trial date has not yet been scheduled.
