ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – With Valentine’s Day approaching, Old Town Albuquerque is filling up with shoppers looking for gifts that feel personal, meaningful, and local. One of the busiest stops this week is Luna & Luz, the boutique known for highlighting New Mexico makers. Inside, shoppers browse handcrafted jewelry, candles, art, and accessories—all curated by owner Tess Coats, who says Valentine’s week brings in people searching for gifts with character and a local touch.
“People want gifts that tell a story,” Coats says. “and, us small businesses, shops, and restaurant’s are always curating and crafting items and experiences.”
Across Old Town, there’s plenty of evidence of strong local business activity. The Old Town Artisans Market alone features 45 local vendors, many reporting some of their strongest sales in years.
Statewide, New Mexico is home to 158,844 small businesses, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Business owners across Old Town say Valentine’s week always brings extra foot traffic—locals picking up last‑minute gifts and visitors exploring the historic plaza. With shops like Luna & Luz spotlighting New Mexico creators, the holiday is both a shopping event and a celebration of the city’s creative community.
And for small retailers, that support matters.
