ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Democrat Deb Haaland has won New Mexico’s race for governor, according to a projection by The Associated Press, becoming the state’s next chief executive and succeeding term-limited Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Haaland, a former U.S. Secretary of the Interior and former member of Congress representing New Mexico, defeated Republican nominee Greggory D. Hull, the former mayor of Rio Rancho.
Unofficial election results posted by the New Mexico Secretary of State showed Haaland leading Tuesday night with 56% of the vote, compared with 44% for Hull, as ballots continued to be counted across the state.
As of the latest update Tuesday evening, election officials reported more than 327,000 votes cast in the governor’s race, with precincts continuing to report results statewide.
Haaland’s victory caps one of the most closely watched races in New Mexico’s 2026 election cycle. The governor’s race topped a ballot that also included contests for U.S. Senate, congressional seats, and several statewide offices.
Election results remain unofficial until certified by state officials.
