ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico drivers are seeing some relief at the gas pump, with fuel prices declining for a second consecutive week. However, despite the recent drop, October is on track to become the most expensive October for gasoline prices in state history.
According to AAA New Mexico, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is now $4.17, down 11 cents from last week. Even with that decrease, prices remain significantly higher than a year ago, when drivers were paying $1.35 less per gallon.
The national average for regular unleaded gasoline stands at $4.22 per gallon, down five cents from the previous week but still well above year-ago levels.
Among the major metropolitan areas surveyed in New Mexico, Farmington has the highest average gas price at $4.57 per gallon, while Santa Fe has the lowest average at $4.11 per gallon.
AAA spokesperson Daniel Armbruster said October 2026 will be the first October on record in New Mexico with a monthly average gas price above $4 per gallon.
AAA estimates the state’s average gasoline price for the month will finish at about $4.34 per gallon, roughly $1.49 higher than the October 2025 average.
While fuel prices remain elevated, AAA says seasonal trends typically lead to lower gas prices during November and December as demand decreases following the summer travel season.
