Red Cross Opens Emergency Shelter in Socorro for Flood-Displaced Residents
SOCORRO, N.M. — The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter in Socorro to assist residents affected by ongoing flooding and evacuation orders in parts of Socorro County.
The shelter is operating at the Finley Complex, located at 202 McCutcheon Avenue in Socorro, and is available to individuals and families who have been displaced by floodwaters or forced to evacuate their homes.
According to the Red Cross, the shelter provides:
- A safe place to stay
- Meals and snacks
- Information and recovery resources
- Emotional support services
- Disaster assistance at no cost
The shelter opened Tuesday night as emergency officials continued responding to flooding impacts across the county. Flooding has prompted evacuations in several areas, including communities affected by rising water and road closures.
In addition to the shelter in Socorro, the Red Cross continues to operate a shelter for residents impacted by flooding in San Juan County at the McGee Park Convention Center in Farmington.
The organization is reminding residents to follow instructions from local emergency officials and avoid driving through flooded roadways as flood conditions persist in portions of New Mexico.
