The long awaited transformation of the San Mateo Towers has begun. The building has been vacant for at least five years attracting vandals to the area. Workers are now performing interior demolition and cleanup with crews upgrading the electrical system, plumbing, and elevators. The tower will be converted into more than 60 apartments while the larger tower at San Mateo and Central is slated for mixed-use development. The project is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars and is on schedule to be completed next year.
