Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — A dispute over 8,000 acres in the East Mountains is getting another review. While the owner of the Campbell Ranch has proposed turning it into homes, a golf course, and a hotel, he has faced criticism over what that could do to the area’s water supply? Dennis Kellogg, President of the East Mountains Protection Action Coalition concurs, saying, water is the key issue. Bernalillo County has now stepped into the debate, and with EMPAC, believe they have a potential “win-win” for the landowner and the community. With support from the coalition, the County is now funding a feasibility study to determine if the land could be used as an open space. Supported by Bernalillo County commissioner Eric Olivas, the study is expected to look into the economic benefits and what it would take to turn the area into a recreational spot, including hiking, and equestrian trails. The study kicks off next month.
