Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – The future of a controversial shelter near Albuquerque’s airport remains uncertain after city councilors voted to revoke its permit.
The vote follows months of complaints from residents and businesses along Yale Boulevard, who say they’ve seen increases in gunfire, drug activity, trash, and discarded needles since the shelter opened last November.The New Mexico Commission for the Blind, which operates nearby, says the conditions have created safety concerns for people who rely on navigating the area by touch.The shelter’s operator,
Empower Health Services, says it has added fencing, security cameras, and overnight security officers. While the permit has been revoked, questions remain about what comes next for the property and the shelter’s operations. Still, City Councilors decided to revoke the permit for the company and questions remain on how the shelter was able to open in the first place.
