ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Passengers aboard a Delta flight from Los Angeles to New York got an unexpected stop in Albuquerque this week after a reported odor onboard prompted the aircraft to divert to the Sunport.
According to Albuquerque International Sunport officials, Delta Flight 958 was traveling from LAX to JFK on Sept. 9 when the crew reported an in-flight mechanical issue and elected to land in Albuquerque out of an abundance of caution.
The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers deplaned without incident.
Delta later said the flight diverted after a smoky odor was detected on the aircraft.
“We apologize to our customers on Delta Flight 958 (LAX to JFK), which diverted due to a smoky odor in the aircraft,” the airline said in a statement. “The aircraft landed uneventfully and we are working to reaccommodate customers as quickly as possible.”
Adding a bit of star power to the unexpected New Mexico stop, actors Andrew Garfield and Nick Robinson, along with internet personality Owen Thiele, were among the passengers onboard the Delta Boeing 767. Thiele later shared photos from the diversion on social media.
Reports indicate the flight crew detected an electrical odor in the cockpit before deciding to divert to Albuquerque.
While the detour wasn’t part of anyone’s travel plans, passengers safely continued their journey after an unscheduled visit to the Duke City.
