Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – Santa Fe Police are investigating the death of a 24-year old woman in what initial reports indicated was an accidental shooting but is being investigated as a homicide.
Alexia Verdugo Sigala was transported via air ambulance to UNMH in Albuquerque where she died of her injuries after police found her with gunshot wounds at approximately 1:45 p.m., on Saturday September 5.
SFPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the area of Rufina Street and Atocha Road in reference to a report of an “accidental” shooting.
During the initial investigation, Santa Fe Police Officers and Detectives learned Ms. Verdugo Sigala’s adult brother had allegedly discharged a rifle unintentionally and she was struck in the torso.
Detectives interviewed her brother and took the firearm as evidence.
SFPD detectives are working with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office to determine the appropriate charges.
An update will be provided when the brother is formally charged.
