MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities say they have arrested three people and seized a large cache of weapons that officials believe was smuggled from Texas and destined for drug cartels.
The operation involved Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office, federal security agencies, the military, marines and the National Guard. The arrests were made in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, along the highway connecting Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey.
According to Mexico’s Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, authorities confiscated:
- 210 firearms
- 195 long guns
- 15 handguns
- Dozens of ammunition magazines
Harfuch said the seizure was the result of intelligence and investigative efforts focused on identifying and dismantling illegal weapons-trafficking routes into Mexico.
Officials allege the weapons originated in Texas and were intended for use by criminal organizations operating in Mexico.
The seizure comes amid continued concerns about cross-border firearms trafficking and cartel violence. Harfuch said Mexican authorities have confiscated more than 30,000 firearms during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration.
He also renewed calls for greater cooperation to curb both drug trafficking into the United States and the movement of illegal weapons into Mexico.
The investigation remains ongoing.
