ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A long-awaited grocery store is moving closer to opening in Albuquerque’s South Broadway neighborhood, bringing a full-service market back to an area that has gone nearly two years without one.
Construction on El Mezquite Market is nearing completion, with crews putting the finishing touches on the new store along Broadway Boulevard. Owner Sergio Bermudez said the primary obstacle remaining is obtaining electrical service for the building.
The project has been in development for about two years and is expected to serve residents in South Broadway, Barelas, and San Jose, neighborhoods that lost a nearby grocery option when Sol Market closed in 2024.
Community leaders say residents have been anticipating the opening, which will provide a new location for grocery shopping in an area with limited food retail options.
Bermudez said much of the project involved new construction and extensive renovations. While the market was originally expected to open in September, recent delays have shifted the anticipated opening date to as early as October.
“We’ll be really excited to see the store, especially to see the community inside,” Bermudez said.
Once open, El Mezquite Market will become one of the few full-service grocery stores serving the surrounding neighborhoods.
