ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As Route 66 celebrates its centennial, one of Albuquerque’s most recognizable cultural landmarks is marking a milestone of its own.
The Guild Cinema, the city’s only independently owned art house movie theater, is celebrating 60 years of bringing unique films and community events to Albuquerque audiences.
Located in the heart of Nob Hill along historic Route 66, the theater first opened its doors on Feb. 16, 1966, debuting with the Greek film The Red Lanterns.
Before becoming a movie theater, the building operated as the Chinese Village Restaurant, owned by the Ong family. In 1966, the property was converted into a theater by the owners of Albuquerque’s Roxy Theater.
Over the decades, the Guild evolved into a destination for independent films, cult classics, documentaries, foreign films and local filmmaking showcases. By the 1970s, it had become known for screenings of movies such as Harold and Maude, Yellow Submarine and a variety of art house productions.
Current owner and operator Keif Henley first joined the theater in 1997, taking on a variety of jobs to help keep the cinema running. He eventually assumed ownership in the early 2000s.
Henley says the Guild’s focus has never been about competing with large commercial theaters but rather creating a space for community, creativity and alternative storytelling.
To celebrate the theater’s anniversary, the Guild is hosting special screenings selected by audiences and longtime supporters. Featured films include cult favorites like The Room, classics such as Diner, and popular hits including Mean Girls.
Henley says the goal remains the same as it was decades ago: giving moviegoers access to films they may not otherwise have a chance to see on the big screen.
Despite dramatic changes in the entertainment industry over the last six decades, the Guild continues to serve as a gathering place for film lovers and a showcase for independent cinema in New Mexico.
