ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A large vacant property at the intersection of Lomas Boulevard and Broadway Boulevard, just north of downtown Albuquerque, could soon be transformed through a new redevelopment effort.
The City of Albuquerque’s Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the site, which was previously used as a storm drainage pond. According to city officials, the property is no longer needed for drainage purposes following the construction of the Ike Benton Pump Station.
The city is inviting developers to submit ideas for a variety of potential uses, including housing, commercial development, community spaces, parks, and other mixed-use projects.
Albuquerque City Councilor Joaquín Baca, whose district includes the property, said he would like to see housing considered for the site, particularly a development that promotes walkability and reduces reliance on vehicles.
“Housing is one of the biggest needs in the city,” Baca said, adding that the location could support a project where residents can live near jobs, services, and transit options without needing a car.
Baca said nearby neighborhood associations have expressed interest in how the property may be developed, though no formal proposals have been submitted yet.
City officials noted that certain uses will not be prioritized, including cannabis production or sales facilities, warehouses, auto repair shops, gas stations, and vehicle sales lots.
The RFP remains open through Aug. 20.
The Lomas and Broadway project is one of several redevelopment and housing initiatives currently being pursued across Albuquerque as city leaders look to encourage investment, increase housing opportunities, and revitalize underutilized properties.
