JEMEZ SPRINGS, N.M. — The Santa Fe National Forest has extended a temporary closure order for portions of the McCauley Springs Fire area as recovery and public safety efforts continue.
The closure, which took effect July 7, will remain in place through Aug. 11, unless lifted earlier. The order prohibits the public from entering the designated closure area or traveling on roads and trails within the restricted zone.
Forest officials say the closure is necessary to protect visitors from hazards that remain following firefighting operations.
At the same time, several popular recreation areas that were previously closed due to the fire have reopened, including:
- La Cueva Day Use Area
- Las Conchas Day Use Area
- Dark Canyon
- Rincon
- Spence Hot Springs
- East Fork Trailhead and trail north toward Las Conchas
- Redondo Campground
However, several locations remain closed until further notice, including:
- Battleship Rock
- Jemez Falls Campground and Group Area
- Jemez Falls Trailhead
- San Diego Overlook
- East Fork Trail from Battleship Rock to Highway 4
The McCauley Springs Fire began June 24 east of Battleship Rock in the Jemez Ranger District. Forest officials report the fire is now 93% contained.
Visitors are encouraged to check current forest alerts before traveling to the area.
