MOUNTAINAIR, N.M. — Three people have died following a possible hazardous materials incident in the town of Mountainair, according to local officials.
Mayor Peter Nieto said the deaths were connected to a response at a residence, where additional individuals also required medical attention.
Officials say 18 first responders, along with one person from the home, were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital. Two of the first responders are reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities say the situation has been contained and there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
The cause of the incident has not been confirmed. However, the mayor said early information suggests narcotics may have been a contributing factor.
The investigation remains ongoing.
