Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –Mayor Keller held a press conference Wednesday morning about the need for more safe outdoor spaces for the unhoused in Albuquerque. Mayor Keller announced a new safe outdoor space is in the development phase at the Gateway West facility. The space will include water, power, bathroom and shower facilities along with shaded areas in a secure structured environment. Mayor Keller :“We are adding a Safe Outdoor Space to Gateway West so people will have access to the City’s broader homeless response system. We cannot solve homelessness with one project or one ordinance, but we can keep building a system that moves people off the streets and into care.” The city has the funds for construction of the site and as part of the city’s new budget Keller says they are asking the council to approve operating funds for the site.
