ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – An inmate at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center is facing a series of new charges after a violent incident inside the facility that involved both another inmate and a corrections officer.
According to court records, 38-year-old Stewart Artis is accused of stabbing another inmate in a shower area of the jail. Investigators say the attack involved a weapon, though details about how it was obtained or the extent of the victim’s injuries have not been fully released. The incident prompted an immediate response from corrections staff inside the housing area.
During that response, authorities say Artis also turned his attention toward a corrections officer, striking the officer with what is described in court documents as a metal object. The confrontation added to the seriousness of the incident, leading to additional charges connected to the officer assault.
Artis is now facing multiple counts, including aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated battery, kidnapping, and possession of a deadly weapon. Officials have not released further details about the sequence of events leading up to the altercation or whether any security measures are under review following the incident.
The injured corrections officer has since received medical care and is reported to be recovering. The condition of the inmate who was stabbed has not been publicly disclosed.
The case remains under investigation as officials continue to examine what led to the incident inside the detention center.
