Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – A new ordinance passed by Albuquerque city leaders is drawing both support and opposition. The City Council voted 6 to 3 to approve a measure that would make it illegal to sit, sleep, or lie on public sidewalks. Supporters say it’s intended to address concerns from businesses about conditions in parts of the city, including downtown. Critics argue the ordinance targets unhoused individuals and could criminalize basic behavior.
An online petition with hundreds of signatures is asking Mayor Tim Keller to veto the measure. If he does, the council’s vote suggests there is enough support to override that veto and enact the ordinance.
