Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – Later today (Thursday), the Santa Fe Public School board will be meeting and on the agenda is a discussion over changing the name of Cesar Chavez elementary school.
According to the districts policy, a committee would have to be formed with appointments from the superintendent to guide the process with the school board having the final say on the new name. The policies on removing a name and creating a new one, require any namesake to be a deceased person with “broad acceptance” in multicultural society, with preference for those who made significant historical or educational contributions locally, statewide or across the nation.
The board meeting is at 5:30 p.m. this evening (Thursday) at Santa Fe Public Schools’ headquarters.
Anyone who has an opinion is welcome to participate before the meeting by emailing, calling or texting the district.
If you can’t attend the meeting in person you can participate by joining online at: meet.google.com/nsp-bjeq-aft
Emailed comments will be provided to all board members and included in the minutes – Please include your first and last name to: Public_forum@sfps.k12.nm.us
There are at least four public schools named after Chávez around the state, including a charter high school in Albuquerque and another in Deming and another elementary school in Las Cruces.
