ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – The National Weather Service says New Mexico is facing another round of hazardous weather, with strong winds, fire danger and mountain snow all impacting the state. High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories remain in effect for central and eastern New Mexico, where forecasters expect strong to damaging winds through Friday. Gusts could reach 60 miles per hour in the hardest‑hit areas, especially along the eastern plains.
Very low humidity and dry fuels are also contributing to critical fire weather conditions. The NWS has issued Red Flag Warnings across eastern New Mexico, warning that any fire starts could spread rapidly under Friday’s strong west winds.
In northern New Mexico, winter weather hazards are also in play. Heavy snow is expected along the Tusas Mountains, with the heaviest totals above 8,500 feet on west‑facing slopes. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect as snowfall continues through Friday, adding to accumulation that has built over several days of back‑to‑back storm systems.
Statewide, the NWS says this round of strong winds marks the final event in a series of systems that have kept conditions windy and cold throughout the week. Winds are forecast to diminish as the weekend begins, though cold temperatures will linger into Sunday morning before warming returns early next week.
