Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced yesterday that she now regrets signing the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act bill into law. The legislation was supposed to support babies born with drugs in their system. The Governor said babies well enough to go home were being released to the care of highly drug addicted parents who were not required to get treatment for their addiction. Lawmakers and advocates said NM’s CYFD didn’t follow through on cases leading to the deaths of babies. The law was signed in 2019 and was supposed to refer families to support and treatment services for newborns exposed to drugs or alcohol. However, no funding was allotted to the bill from the legislature. The governor stated she was convinced at the time that money was coming but it never did. Last summer the governor issued an order that a judge had to decide whether babies could go home and out of 180 cases so far only two babies have been returned home.
