Albuquerque- The city has filed an emergency petition to remove a homeless camp at the Quirky Books on Jefferson and Central immediately. The bookstore has operated the camp on its parking lot for several years. On Monday, the city asked for a preliminary injunction to have the camp removed immediately. In a press release the city states, “The emergency filing argues that the city and nearby residents will suffer irreparable harm if the property continues to operate,” Albuquerque police records show that they have recorded over 230 calls at the location in just the past year.
The city’s injunction request comes after a fatal shooting happened on the property on Saturday. 28-year old Gregory Antone was shot and killed after an argument with another man turned violent. The bookstore ownership says none of the homeless campers were involved in the shooting.
