ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – New Mexico United delivered a commanding performance Saturday night, defeating San Antonio FC 2-0 in the USL Championship Western Conference quarterfinal at Isotopes Park.
Mukwelle Akale opened the scoring in the 20th minute, capitalizing on a rebound during United’s traditional “Magic Minute” celebration. Valentin Noël added a second goal in the 58th, finishing off a well-placed pass from Kipp Keller to give United breathing room.
Goalkeeper Kris Shakes was a standout in his first professional playoff start, earning his fifth shutout of the season. He made several key saves, including a diving stop in the 39th minute and a crucial denial of a San Antonio free kick in the 72nd. Shakes anchored a disciplined back line and kept United in control throughout the match.
United outshot San Antonio 14-6, held 55% possession, and limited the visitors to just four shots on goal. The win extended NMU’s unbeaten streak to eight games and was celebrated by 8,287 fans at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park.
The night also marked a potential farewell for co-captain Kalen Ryden, who was honored postgame after announcing his retirement at season’s end.
With Sacramento and Orange County ending their quarterfinal in a draw, New Mexico United will host the Western Conference semifinal at The Lab this Saturday at 7 p.m.
