CATRON COUNTY, N.M. — A Luna County woman and her young son were killed Wednesday in a rollover crash on U.S. Highway 180, according to the Catron County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the vehicle was traveling southbound on the highway when it left the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. Preliminary findings indicate the driver then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times.
The woman and her son died as a result of their injuries.
Five other children who were inside the vehicle, ranging in age from 1 to 12 years old, survived the crash but sustained injuries. Authorities said the children were airlifted to hospitals in the Phoenix area for treatment.
Officials have not released the names of the victims.
The Catron County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash.
