Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – An Albuquerque District judge has officially granted permission for Adlai Mestre to pursue an insanity defense in his upcoming triple-murder trial. Mestre is accused of fatally shooting his mother, father, 17-year-old sister, and the family dog at their Tijeras home in October 2024.
The defense presented evidence showing Mestre was entirely detached from reality during his arrest.and was so incoherent he repeatedly asked detectives how many people had died, unable to comprehend that his family was dead.
In June of 2025 Mestre was deemed to have his competency restored, leading to a grand jury indictment.
No trial date has been set.
