ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo County Animal Care Services is reopening its canine housing area after extensive repairs and renovations following mold damage that forced part of the facility to close in 2024.
County officials say the damage resulted in the loss of 28 canine rooms and limited public access to the interior portion of the shelter for more than a year. The newly restored rooms are designed to provide a quieter, more comfortable environment where dogs can relax, feel secure, and better show their personalities while awaiting adoption.
Animal Care Services leaders say the reopening marks an important milestone in restoring full shelter operations and improving conditions for animals in their care.
To celebrate, the county will host a community event called “Raise the Woof!” on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, adoptable animals, food, music, and family-friendly activities.
Bernalillo County commissioners Frank Baca and Eric Olivas are expected to attend the celebration.
Shelter officials say they hope the reopening will strengthen community engagement and help more animals find permanent homes.
