ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian Monday night in the South Valley, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at approximately 8:54 p.m. to the intersection of Coors Boulevard SW and Sage Road SW after receiving reports that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian and fled the scene.
When deputies arrived, they found an adult man who was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity pending notification of family members.
According to investigators, witnesses reported that the pedestrian was lawfully crossing within a marked crosswalk when a vehicle traveling northbound on Coors Boulevard allegedly ran a red light and struck him before leaving the area.
Using information provided by witnesses, including a description of the vehicle and its license plate number, deputies were able to quickly identify a suspect vehicle. Authorities later located the vehicle with damage consistent with the crash and took the driver into custody without incident.
The driver, identified only as a 17-year-old juvenile, has been charged with Homicide by Vehicle and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Great Bodily Harm or Death. Investigators say additional charges could be filed as the case moves forward.
The vehicle has been seized as evidence, and the investigation remains ongoing.
