ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico United extended its home unbeaten streak to nine matches Wednesday night, finishing in a 2-2 draw against El Paso at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park.
The match doubled as the team’s Star Wars Night promotion, with the All-American Rejects also making a special appearance, participating in the ceremonial coin toss.
On the field, forward Greg Hurst led the way for United, scoring both goals and ending his early-season scoring drought. His first goal came in the 14th minute, slipping past the goalkeeper to even the match after El Paso’s Rubio Rubín opened scoring in the 12th minute.
Hurst struck again 10 minutes later, finishing a pass from Ousman Jabang to give United a 2-1 lead.
“I think the growth that we’ve had as a group in the last two or three weeks has been unbelievable,” Hurst said after the match.
El Paso responded late in the second half, with Diego Abitia scoring in the 86th minute to level the match.
“Teams are always going to make adjustments… it’s on us to kind of read the game a little bit more savvy,” Jabang said postmatch.
The game drew 7,758 fans as United remained unbeaten at home this season.
New Mexico United now looks ahead to Saturday, when they host Las Vegas Lights at Isotopes Park for the team’s first-ever Country Night.
