Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –NM Highlands University is hoping to upgrade its sports facilities at their Las Vegas campus by securing $80 million from the legislature in the final days of the session. NMHU President Dr. Neil Woolf told a committee, that for far too long, the university’s Division 2 athletes, which make up about 14% of the student population, have had to compete on poor fields or play off campus. Some Legislators agreed that student athletes deserve improved sports facilities but the price tag of $80 million according to Senator Pat Boone was “a shock.” NMHU’s leadership said improvements to their facilities would allow them to offer additional sports on campus like men’s track and field plus their ability to host NCAA meets, would hopefully draw more student athletes to NM.
