ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Albuquerque woman has been sentenced to prison in connection with the death of her 4-month-old son, who was born with methamphetamine in his system and later died in a home where investigators found illegal drugs.
Gabriella Muniz was sentenced this week to 18 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections after pleading no contest in July to child abuse resulting in death.
The case stems from an investigation that led Albuquerque police to arrest Muniz and the child’s father, Victor Gonzales, on June 5, 2025.
According to investigators, the infant was born drug-exposed, with methamphetamine detected in his system. Authorities also found illegal drugs inside the home where the child later died.
Muniz entered a no-contest plea earlier this year, accepting responsibility for the charge without admitting guilt.
The child’s father, Gonzales, was previously sentenced to more than two decades in prison for his role in the infant’s death.
The case highlights ongoing concerns among law enforcement and child welfare officials about the dangers posed by drug exposure to infants and young children.
