SANTA FE, N.M. — The New Mexico Higher Education Department has completed its annual state authorization review, renewing approval for 82 educational institutions to operate in New Mexico during the 2027 academic year.
According to the department, all institutions reviewed through the state’s Private Postsecondary Schools Division met New Mexico’s requirements for continued authorization, including standards related to educational quality, accountability, transparency, and student protections.
The institutions approved for renewal include:
- 42 distance education institutions
- 35 licensed institutions
- Five out-of-state proprietary institutions
An additional 11 registered institutions were reported to be in good standing and were not due for renewal this year.
State officials say the authorization process serves as a safeguard for students by ensuring private postsecondary institutions comply with state laws and regulations before continuing operations.
The department noted that the strong showing among distance education providers reflects ongoing demand for flexible learning opportunities, particularly for working adults and students in rural communities.
Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez said the review process helps protect students’ educational investments by requiring schools to meet established standards before receiving authorization to operate.
Officials with the department’s Private Postsecondary Schools Division say every institution undergoing renewal this year was reviewed and found to be in compliance with New Mexico regulations.
State authorization is required for private postsecondary schools operating in New Mexico and is intended to ensure institutions maintain minimum standards established by state law and administrative rules.
