ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As the ExxonMobil Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta prepares to return this October, organizers are once again asking local property owners to help provide safe landing spaces for balloon pilots through the annual “X Marks the Spot” program.
The initiative, a partnership between Bernalillo County and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, encourages landowners to place a large white X on their property to signal that balloon landings are welcome during the nine-day event, scheduled for October 3-11, 2026.
Organizers say the program has become increasingly important as development across the Albuquerque metro area continues to reduce open space available for landings. The white X gives pilots a clear visual indication that a property owner is willing to allow a balloon to land on their property.
According to Balloon Fiesta officials, the program helps improve safety while strengthening the long-standing relationship between local residents and the world-renowned event.
Participating landowners whose property is used as a landing site during Fiesta events will be eligible for daily prize drawings. Pilots will carry information cards and collect details from property owners after landing on marked sites.
Approximately 200 official white X markers are available at no cost while supplies last. Residents may also create their own markers using white sheets or similar materials.

Markers are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
County and Balloon Fiesta officials say the program allows residents to play a direct role in one of Albuquerque’s most recognizable annual events while helping pilots identify safe and accessible landing options throughout the metro area.
